Provincial Museum of Traditional Clothing (Morón de Almazán, Soria)
The Museum
The Provincial Museum of Traditional Clothing in Morón de Almazán was established on the initiative of the Diputación Provincial de Soria (the Provincial Council) and inaugurated in 2012.
The Museum is housed in the Palace of the Mendoza family, located at the heart of the Plaza Mayor in Morón de Almazán—a square widely considered one of the finest architectural ensembles of the Spanish Renaissance. This building has become a repository for the generosity of the people of Soria. By donating or loaning the garments that their ancestors preserved in wooden chests over the generations, they have made this Museum possible. In doing so, they have safeguarded the most intimate expression of our way of life, our economy, our history, and, ultimately, our culture.
The Museum's objectives focus on the conservation and protection of regional dress and the promotion of its awareness as an integral part of Ethnological Heritage, reflecting a historical reality. Furthermore, it provides an analytical insight into the cultural, social, and economic implications of historical clothing, while striving to foster ethnological research and explore its ongoing influence on contemporary fashion design.
The Collection
The Museum of Traditional Clothing treasures a diverse array of collections. Its contents encompass a wide variety of objects and garments, all tied together by their connection to the attire and lifestyles of bygone eras. They reflect the needs of a society that has now vanished: everyday clothes, ceremonial finery, dowry trousseaus, jewellery, and accessories, as well as the materials and tools required for textile production. Ritual garments, vintage prints, historical photographs, and audiovisual displays further document and enrich the collection.
The museum’s holdings originate from private collections and have been brought together thanks to the dedicated work of the Culture Department of the Provincial Council. These collections continue to grow in both number and variety day by day.
